PHISH, SATURDAY 03/01/2003
GREENSBORO COLISEUM
Greensboro, NC
Was completely exhausted from the solo drive down from Nassau the night before. Had shin splints bad by this time in the tour too. Will say the weather was nice for a change at least in terms of the temperature not being -20 degrees even if there was a misty rain during pre-show. This lot was RAGING.
SET 1: Chalk Dust Torture: 30,000 people in full throat for the opening notes of this one. Folks were looking to get down and capitalize on the momentum created from the northeast run. Ripping version.
The Moma Dance: Standard.
Foam: Page is amazing here. Page definitely had a good bit of swagger on this tour, he let it fly here. Trey crushes his spot too, technically proficient and just flat out rips the hell out of this one. Seriously, very impressive.
Lawn Boy: And the crow goes WILD, just deafening applause.
Character Zero: Super rare for this era to have this tune not closing a set. Last time it saw the middle of the second set would have been Austin City Limits but for a real show it would be 8.12.98 and wouldn’t have this sort of placement again until 6.14.09. Pretty cool! They rip this one to shreds. >
Divided Sky: The glowstick antics were outrageous!
Mountains in the Mist: Fantastic.
Waves: Standard. >
Sample in a Jar: LOL as a set closer.
SET 2: Rock and Roll: Smokes just like the CDT opener. >
Wilson: Has a bit of extra juice. >
Piper: Fairly lazy jam outside of the two minutes or so from the climax >
Also Sprach Zarathustra: Average. >
Wolfman's Brother: Standard, short. ->
Boogie On Reggae Woman: Great segue out of rip corded Wolfman’s.
Wading in the Velvet Sea: Love this one. >
Run Like an Antelope: Standard.
Carolina: Nice!
ENCORE: First Tube: Standard. >
You Enjoy Myself: Rips a bit, solid B – version ->
Proud Mary: Pretty freaking cool, left me jonesing for summer tour which I went all in on like this tour and did every show.
Replay Value/Summary: I was zapped every seeing every show on this tour, partying hard at Nassau and having to drive down to Greensboro by myself. I was toast for this show. But I have listened to it a million times. It has a ton of energy and would be great to introduce a newcomer to. But there is just not much to revisit here outside of the YEM and a minute or two of Piper.
Show Rating: 3.8 out of 5
